Latest Opportunity: Service Co Ordinator

Location: Kimbolton  

A Hofmann Megaplan Service Coordinator provides a top-level customer service, not only to our clients but also our engineers, subcontractors and colleagues.

They are outstanding communicators, who work as part of a dedicated customer service team to ensure all jobs are progressed in a prompt and timely manner, to match the premium equipment being supplied.

If you are enthusiastic, hardworking and have a common-sense approach to work driven by attention to detail, this may be the ideal job for you.

The purpose of the position is to schedule installations and service work for our engineers. Part of this is ensuring the parts are in stock and available before booking the work with customers.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Nationwide scheduling of installations and service work for engineer's
  • Liaising with our National Distribution Centre to ensure machines/ parts are in stock before arranging installation or service work
  • Handling inbound calls with the aim of diagnosing faults and arranging appropriate service work if required
  • Making outbound calls to contact customers when installation/service work has been scheduled

Essential skills for success:

  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Understanding of Sage accounts (desired but not essential)
  • Full UK Driving licence
  • Practical problem-solving skills
  • An ability to prioritise and balance multiple workloads

Case Study: D and R Tyres Durham

"We looked at various vehicle lifts and alignment machines. We even sat and discussed some with my accountant and felt that the outlay was a huge gamble. Others, well we will leave that there, as they never returned to the site.

From the initial viewing of the Hofmann Megaplan alignment machine, we noticed how quickly we would be able to get a reading. We wanted to make sure we could align 16 seater Mercedes Benz buses so the ramp size was always going to be important.

Roll forward to a completed install of a 6-tonne ramp and the Megaplan Ssence. The install has taken 48 hours, exactly as planned. Training on the alignment equipment has been done and we have noticed that the speed to get a reading is outstanding.

What was taking us 35 minutes with our old machine from another supplier now takes us 4 minutes. That is to get a reading and includes inputting data. We have another screen fitted in the customer waiting area so they can see exactly what is happening to their car. This also means our office staff can speak with the customer regarding the alignment.

Hofmann Megaplan first choice for tyre equipment with Mac Tools

The last weekend of August saw the launch of the all-new Mac Tools tyre equipment line, displayed and demonstrated at the Mac Tools Fair in Birmingham, UK.

These high-end models have been produced exclusively for Mac by Hofmann Megaplan, who will offer a full spectrum of support, including training and aftersales support.

Mac Tools were looking for a range of own-branded product they could focus on, as up until now, they had been partnering with numerous different brands and therefore had very little enthusiasm or focus.

James Boon, EVP for Garage Equipment Product & Strategy, put together a line which gave Mac some exciting and unique features, at a price point that keeps them competitive via their mobile network across the UK & Ireland.

The Wheel Alignment Blog | More to Alignment than just Alignment

Seized components shouldn't stop wheel aligners!

With almost 30 years experience in the tyre trade, you notice a few things. One thing you can't miss out on is the opportunity to increase revenue through the fair work that comes alongside using your wheel alignment servicing equipment.

A most common type of work I see? The same old issue of seized components that never go away.

People realise the potential profit that wheel aligners offer as part of their service structure. 

It used to be the case when selling alignment that I would experience a lot of negative feedback around this exact issue. "I can't be bothered to spend hours unseizing nuts and bolts for the sake of what should be a quick alignment job."

Know your worth and tell your customer

Having the correct tools will help ensure you never have to turn a wheel alignment job away or lose money on it.

I've always stuck by a simple rule that ensures every alignment job equates to fair profit for a garage without ripping off a customer.

It's simple enough. If the bolts don't unseize within 10-15 minutes then you should pull the customer over and explain that, in order to continue the alignment, you'll need to unseize these adjusters. Many customers will be aware of this common problem. They'll understand the extra work required, including heating the component, cleaning, greasing or worst-case scenario replacing.

All this serves to keep your customer safe and their vehicle on the road for as long as possible so it would be neglectful to ignore the alignment issue just because of an issue like this. 

I've always classed seized components not as a bad problem, but as extra revenue. You'd do the same if you had a seized in diesel injector, or maybe even call a specialist in to do it.

Be prepared, have the right equipment for dealing with seized components and be honest with your customers.

The Wheel Alignment Blog | The Only Prerequisite is Training

As alignment engineers, we often get calls from customers who have become frustrated because they are experiencing readings that they do not understand or that appear incorrect. It could be that these different reading are also resulting in alignment errors and cars not driving straight. 

These erroneous reading are often down to a mistake made by the user, often because they are missing the basic prerequisites of working with alignment technology, TRAINING! A a garage owner it could be detremental to your business ignoring the training needs of your team. It could cost you customers and as such revenue. We've dug a little deeper below.

 Why is this so important? 

When a new alignment system is purchased Hofmann Megaplan always train the customer. This puts them in a position to start utilising this equipment immediately in generating revenue. 

Of course over the year's staff are going to come and go. If you have a 100% staff retention rate in your garage then congratulations, but even your A* alignment guy that said he'll never leave you will retire someday. 

This can quickly result in other members of the team having to step up without notice or training to complete alignments. After all, the odds are its one of your most profitable services and the only other alternative might be to send customers elsewhere.

You can't blame a technician standing in or an untrained user for missing required checks he's never seen or not realising the machine is due for an update or the equipment needs calibration. 

These include: 

  • Always checking tyre pressures before an alignment
  • Review suspension height to ensure there are no broken/incorrect springs or incorrectly adjusted coil overs
  • Check for play in:
    • The lower ball joints
    • Upper ball joints / Top mounts
    • Lower wishbone bushes
    • Subframe mountings
    • Tie rods and ends
    • Wheel bearings 
  • Also, check:
    • Vehicle height and ensure air suspension is set to Jack mode
    • Body distortion
    • Shock absorbers
    • Check for abnormal tyre wear
    • Correct tyre size fitted
    • Check adjusters to ensure they are free and adjustable
  • ​Is Alignment software up to date and is someone ensuring the equipment has been calibrated as required?

Advanced ADAS Launched as "A Night at the Carnival" hits Glasgow

​With over 800 garage equipment users in attendance, A Night at the Carnival Trade show ​was billed by the organisers as "probably the Best Trade Show on Earth". For our team, it is certainly one of the most unique, not only for the carnival atmosphere but also as a chance to debut the Advanced ADAS system from Hofmann Megaplan, set to shake up the way garages complete this process.

The event brings together a top mix of equipment end users, from Garage owners to Mechanics, all of whom our team enjoyed welcoming onto the Hofmann Megaplan stand. 

On the evening we were offering live demonstrations covering multiple equipment ranges. This offered attendees a true insight not only into the premium quality and advanced operational features that Hofmann Megaplan offers as standard but also the variety of garage equipment we are now able to offer.

On the night...

Hofmann Megaplan Technical specialists were on hand throughout the evening's proceedings from tyre fitting experts to alignment engineers.

The headline product on show was our brand new Advanced ADAS system. This is a system designed from the ground up to offer ADAS calibrations in the most cost efficient way imaginable. A 65" TV Monitor eliminates the need for updates through the purchasing of costly boards. New targets can be downloaded and displayed instantly on the monitor FOC.

Guest Blog: Tyres. Customers get what they pay for, but are you telling them that?

With the ever-increasing amount of new tyre manufacturers now available on the market, I thought it worth taking some time to explore the issues I've seen many fitters having when it comes to quoting and replacing wheels recently.

As an alignment engineer, you often find yourself on installs with a garage owner nearby on the phone to a customer. This probably rings true for many tyre fitters reading this now. The story on the other end of the phone goes something along the lines of "How much will that be then? Oh wow! What about the price of a budget tyre?". It is the term BUDGET TYRE that causes the hearts of many a fitter to sink, but not for the same reason a customer might think. 

A budget tyre approach simply doesn't suit most vehicles. As a fitter, you will have taken the time to ask what car the customer drives, how many miles they cover and maybe even the type of driving they do most commonly. 

All this should determine the right type of tyre for the vehicle, at a price point which will be most efficient in the long run. Whichever option is fitted, as a business you are likely to be making roughly the same for fitting. Customers forget it is the quality of tyre they are compromising on, not the price of your time. 

The same garage owner I mentioned earlier said to me after that call "this customer does 40,000 miles a year and wants budgets" rolling his eyes in disbelief. Some customers will take this a step further! 

I've seen many people buying tyres on auction websites, thinking they're getting a great deal only to find out that the tyres have the wrong speed or load rating, risking the safety of themselves and other road users.

The Moral of this Tyre Fitting Story 

As tyre fitters, you are the ones supplying the tyre, you have the tyre fitting equipment and so as an industry, we should be trying to educate and not frustrate! 

There are tyres now being manufactured just for summer and winter use on domestic vehicles. Yet many people keep the same type of budget tyre on all year round and wonder why they need replacing 4x as much, forgetting the impact these cheap tyres will have on how the car reacts during the summer/winter conditions.

What's more, car manufacturers now often work with tyre manufacturers in a bid to resolve common wear issues. For example, the tyre manufacturers may use harder compounds in certain parts of the tyre that suffer from wear more. Fitting a budget would simply allow these common issues to continue and cost the customer more in the long run.

Many buy second hand and forget there is still a cost to pay for the fitting, supply of valve, wheel balancing and correct tyre disposal. Access to your tyre fitting equipment and advice on the correct tyre is all a part of the package you need to sell. 

So next time a car arrives and you're getting ready to fire up your tyre changing machine, remember, you probably make a similar margin no matter what tyre you fit, but the customer will spend a lot more and potentially not trust you if their tyres are bald a month later. Take the time, have the conversation and make sure you're using your tyre machine to fit the right tyres.

Case Study: SCS Tyres Co

This install comes from the Northants and the fitters at SCS Tyres Co

Specialists in industrial, commercial and domestic tyres covering Northamptonshire, SCS Tyres is a family run business. Its three generations of owners have racked up over 60 years experience in the industry. 

As such these guys know their way around a tyre machine and settle for nothing but the best. 

It all started with a meeting at our showroom. The customer wanted to kit out their brand new workshop and getting hands-on with the equipment they'd be using going forward was a must. We expect this and it is one of the main reasons we keep a showroom which is fully stocked with all our garage equipment, ready to use! 

After going through all our equipment in detail and consulting with our garage specialist about their requirements they decided to go with the following.

This is a first class machine line up that we think you'll agree the end result is a clean workshop with incredible equipment. The install was completed by Equipment Specialist Andy Currell. Full onsite training was also included to enable the team to make the most of their feature-rich new premium machines. 

5 and a half hours later, SCS Tyres were ready to start fitting and Hofmann Megaplan left another very happy customer.

Case Study: Elite Tyres Direct

As always our engineers have been busy up and down the country fitting a variety of garage equipment. 

Last week we completed an install for Elite Direct Tyres in Rainham. From their state of the art showroom and garage in the east of London they offer everything from tyre fitting and wheel alignment to car servicing and MOTs.

The company boasts 67,000 square feet of warehousing space alongside its 20,000 square feet retail store, which they keep fully-stocked with the latest alloy wheels and tyres alongside many other ancillary products. They even have a cafe in their waiting area!  

Self confessed experts in all things automotive, they say on their website "we pride ourselves on our extensive knowledge of tyres, alloy wheels, brakes, suspension systems, exhausts – the list is endless."

With sales complete onsite, over the phone and through their Point S powered website, this is a busy workshop with a requirement for the best equipment.

Also installed was a megamount 503 Racing, one of our most popular tyre fitting machines, renowned for its incredible price/ performance ratio. Also added to this garages incredible equipment line up was a brand new 3D fully-automatic data input wheel balancer, the megaspin 200-3S.

This was in addition to a megaspin 400 the company had also previously purchased from the same wheel balancing range.

Event Review: Point S Conference

Hofmann Megaplan was pleased to take part in the Point S members Conference & Trade Fair held on the 23rd February  2019. 

The event took place across the entire day with scheduled conference talks, followed by an open trade fair style floor for guests to explore. 

The trade show part of the event was a great opportunity for many exhibitors to talk to the end user of their products and services. Hofmann Megaplan were the only ones however to be demonstrating the revolutionary Handheld TreadReader device. This interactive demo was able to happen live at the show, giving customers a real feel for the benefit this device offers. 

This TreadReader is exclusive to Hofmann Megaplan in the UK and generated a lot of attention, including interest from multiple business owners looking to increase alignment and tyre service sales in their garages. 

Alongside this, the team were on hand to discuss items across the entire range of garage equipment. Some of the highlights included our ever popular scissor lifts, the high spec 813XL tyre changer and OWB (One Weight Balance)

One of the most prestigious machine in our line up which also grabbed the attention of many was the Smart X. Considered by many to be The Ultimate in Tyre Fitting & Removal Technology, this BMW approved machine keeps safety at the heart of the operation by completely automating the process of removing and fitting a tyre. Human error is a thing of the past!

The Wheel Alignment Blog | Winter Wheel Alignment System Tips

A quick one this month on the havoc cold weather can wreak when it comes to your wheel alignment system!

Keep your Turn Plates Turning, no matter the weather...

 The severity of weather makes a massive difference of course but cold weather normally means more ice on the road. As such we see more salt, dirt and sometimes even sludge on the roads. All of this will collect within the wheel arches of vehicles and it can easily fall onto your turn plates. This will result in corrosion of the turn plates and their useful lifespan being decreased. Did you know a very fine spray of lubricant daily can save your turn plates from corroding? A small cost to make a big saving long term.

Caster Swings + the cold = A MUST! 

​Don't forget your caster swings, especially in the cold!

Most machines are able to bypass doing a caster swing and so this may not be a check you think to regularly complete. However, this could mean you are missing out on service up sales from damage more commonly caused during the winter months. 

Hitting the kerb at any speed can have a noticeable effect on alignment but many don't realise the unseen damage that happens. We commonly see bent wishbones in the winter months from cases where a customer has skidded on ice and had an impact with the kerb. 

Not doing your caster swing check could mean you are missing out on replacing bent wishbones. Your customers will thank you as they drive away safer!

Infrared Interruption 

Most modern computer wheel alignment machines use infrared technology. That includes 3D and CCD alignment machines. 

We always receive, without fail, several callouts over the winter periods where erratic readings or blocked beams have been reported on these systems. The issue is often quite an obscure one. 

We've found that many garages are now starting to use infrared heaters to keep their workshops warm in the winter. The issue? Unfortunately, these heaters are polluting the space with infrared rays. It is an easy problem to overcome though. The solution is to simply not to shine the heaters near the wheel aligners whilst in use.

Keep warm and keep aligning with the accuracy these machines are built to offer!

Machine Builder/ PDI Engineer - Ramsey

Again this role requires a great deal of enthusiasm, common sense, and the ability to work well as part of a team. There are also overtime opportunities regularly available. Some knowledge of either the machine building environment or garage equipment will be greatly beneficial. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Unloading & storing deliveries post build
  • Completing the build for a range of garage equipment including tyre changers, wheel balancers and alignment systems (Browse the Hofmann Megaplan site for the full range) 
  • Testing and fault diagnostics on new machines as well as reporting and improving the build process
  • Working with engineers to improve overall operational efficiency
  • Refurbishment and re conditioning of part exchange machines as well as ex-demo equipment
  • Forklift license desired but not required

You will be working in a hands on the environment using power tools and other heavy machinery. This is a physical role with a great team of people in a rapidly growing part of the business.

Engineers Kick Off 2019 in Spain with Cascos

Case Study: Ecoline 88 installed in Paris

Hofmann Megaplan are proud to supply wheel alignment equipment not just in the UK but also across Europe!

The above image shows one of our most recent installs of an Ecoline 88. This machine was installed in an accident repair centre Paris, France. 

The Ecoline 88 is one of the most popular wheel aligner models ever sold by Hofmann Megaplan, not least because it includes some luxury additional features whilst keeping its overall cost down compared to similar machines.  

Owners of this machine will enjoy the ease of use when attaching the 3-point 'GrabClamps', the heavy-duty mechanical turnplates and the advanced measuring heads that come as standard, making full 4 wheel alignment a walk in the park.

The 'GrabClamps' alone makes this aligner worth the investment. The measuring head is mounted to the wheel using sprung-loaded 'arms' that grab the tyre, and 3 nylon locators on the rim. This ensures there is no metal to metal contact and thus no damaged rims.

The Wheel Alignment Blog | 3 New Years Alignment Resolutions to make this year

Alignment is an ever evolving practice with technology meaning constant innovation. Making sure all the wheels point in the right direction is only the start now!

With so much changing in the world of wheel alignment systems and technology constantly making for new capabilities of our alignment machines, there are more services then ever before to offer and thus more revenue potential for your garage.

Here are our top 3 areas to watch out for in 2019 when it comes to your alignment system: 

Keep it Calibrated in 2019!

So often we get phone calls from customers complaining of issues with there aligner. Turns out the machine hasn't been calibrated in 2 years. Worst case I've seen machines go 3 years + without a calibration.

Hofmann Megaplan recommend calibrating Laser alignment systems every year while Computer machines should be calibrated every 6 months. This is simply because there are more measurements and to keep that extremely high level of accuracy the machine needs this regular check up.

Whilst we're there, using the latest software and database is essential. Failure to do so can mean not having the latest vehicle information and may lead to lost sales.

And voila you now have the latest machine out there.

ADAS Calibration Equipment - it's a no brainer!

 

ADAS (or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) are a common occurrence on modern vehicles, designed to remove the scope for human error when driving. Of course if these have not been calibrated correctly the vehicle may not know which way is forward to begin with.

These cameras need to be calibrated. In fact any time you have work done on an area that houses a ADAS sensor, it should be recalibrated! Given that as a garage you are likely to work on one of these areas of the car, upgrading your aligner to include ADAS Calibration Systems could be a no brainer

Selling Alignment in 2019 just got easier

Technology can even help you sell alignment service to your customers this year. Devices like TreadReader give you a hand held tread depth scanner that can be quickly rolled over all 4 tyres of a vehicle. From there a simple report is produced giving the customer information of the condition of tyres, alignment and key performance indicators like increase in stopping distance. These reports are hard to ignore and could save a drivers life where they otherwise may have carried on with unsafe tyres.
