Building a Business Built on Trust
How one ambitious garage owner transformed an opportunity into a workshop designed for the future.
Every workshop has a story. Some have been passed down through generations, while others are built through years of determination, hard work and a willingness to take opportunities when they arise. Deano’s’ Garage falls firmly into the latter category.
Located on the outskirts of the Cotswolds, the business has steadily built a reputation for honest advice, quality workmanship and a customer-first approach that has earned the trust of motorists across the local area. At the centre of that reputation is 27-year-old owner Dean, whose journey into the motor trade began long before he ever considered owning a garage.
"I've been around workshops since I was twelve," Dean explains. "It's all I've ever really wanted to do."
Like many people in the industry, Dean's passion for the trade started young. What began as a fascination with cars quickly developed into a career, learning from experienced technicians, gaining practical knowledge and understanding that fixing vehicles is only one part of running a successful garage. Looking after customers, communicating honestly and building long-term relationships are just as important as technical ability.
Those principles remain at the heart of Deano’s’ Garage today.
"I want customers to feel comfortable coming here," says Dean. "Everything is explained properly, every invoice is itemised and if something doesn't need doing, we'll tell them. Nobody should ever leave a garage wondering what they've paid for or whether they've been given the right advice. If people trust us, they'll come back, and they'll recommend us to other people."
It's a refreshingly straightforward philosophy, but one that has become increasingly valuable in an industry where trust can often be the deciding factor between a customer returning or looking elsewhere.
That commitment to doing things properly extends well beyond customer service. It also shaped one of the biggest decisions Dean has made since taking over the business.
Seeing Opportunity Rather Than Change
When the opportunity arose to relocate Deano’s’ Garage into larger premises, it represented far more than simply moving equipment from one building to another.
For Dean, it was the chance to create the workshop he had always wanted.
Like many independent garages, the previous premises had gradually evolved over time. Equipment had been positioned to suit the building rather than the workflow, and while it continued to serve the business well, Dean recognised that the move presented a rare opportunity to step back and consider how the workshop could better support the future of the business.
Demand for MOT testing was continuing to grow and increasing capacity had become a priority, but this wasn't simply about fitting another lift into a larger building. It was about designing a workshop that would work more efficiently, improve technician productivity and create the foundations for the next stage of growth.
"I knew if we were going to do it, it was worth doing properly," Dean says. "This wasn't just about today. We wanted to build something that would still be working for us years down the line."
A Different Kind of Conversation
Dean had already known Stephen Ellis, Hofmann Megaplan's MOT Specialist, for some time, which meant their discussions started from a position of trust rather than a traditional supplier-customer relationship.
Instead of beginning with equipment specifications or quotations, the conversation focused on the business itself.
What were Dean's ambitions? How many MOTs did he want the workshop to complete each day? How could the available space be used more effectively? What layout would allow technicians to work more efficiently while giving the business room to continue growing?
"Dean already had a clear vision of where he wanted to take the business," explains Stephen. "Our role was to help turn that vision into a practical workshop layout that would maximise the available space and support his future plans. The equipment is important, of course, but getting the workshop design right is what allows that equipment to perform at its best."
That planning process led to one particularly important decision.Rather than simply installing a new MOT lane, the existing two-post lift was repositioned as part of a complete redesign of the workshop layout. Although it might seem like a relatively small change, it allowed every available square metre to be used more effectively, improving vehicle movement throughout the workshop while creating the capacity Dean was looking for.
It's often these decisions that make the greatest difference. A successful workshop isn't defined by the amount of equipment it contains but by how efficiently everything works together.
Investing in the Long Term
With the workshop layout agreed, attention turned to selecting the equipment that would become the centrepiece of the new MOT facility.
Dean wasn't looking for the lowest-cost solution. His focus was on reliability, build quality and equipment capable of supporting the business for many years to come.
A premium European-manufactured Cascos ATL lift was chosen as the foundation of the new MOT bay, combining robust engineering with the durability required for a busy testing environment.
"When you're relying on equipment every single day, you want confidence that it's going to perform," says Dean. "This wasn't about buying something for a couple of years. It was about investing in equipment that reflects the standards we want the business to be known for."
The completed installation has given Deano’s’ Garage the capacity to carry out up to fourteen MOT tests each day while creating a cleaner, more efficient workspace for the technicians who use it.
More importantly, it has provided the business with the flexibility to continue growing as demand increases.
From Groundworks to Completion
Projects of this scale are rarely as straightforward as simply delivering equipment and bolting it into position. The success of any installation begins long before the first vehicle is driven onto a lift.
Groundworks started almost immediately after the plans had been agreed, with the new concrete base carefully prepared before being left to cure for a full week. Although it extended the overall programme slightly, allowing the concrete sufficient time to reach full strength ensured the installation had the foundations it needed for years of reliable service.
From breaking ground through to commissioning the completed MOT lane, the entire project was completed in around three weeks.
Careful planning, clear communication and close collaboration between Dean, Stephen and the installation team meant every stage progressed smoothly, allowing the business to focus on preparing for the future rather than dealing with unnecessary disruption.
More Than an MOT Bay
Walking around Deano’s’ Garage, it's immediately obvious that this project was about much more than increasing MOT capacity. The workshop feels purposeful. Vehicles move naturally through each working area, technicians have the space they need and the new MOT facility has become an integral part of the business rather than simply another piece of equipment.
For Dean, however, the biggest achievement isn't measured by the number of MOT tests the workshop can now complete. It's the confidence to keep moving forward. The move into larger premises has created opportunities that simply didn't exist before. Ideas are already being discussed for the next phase of expansion, with continued investment planned to further improve both workshop capability and the customer experience.
"We've got plenty more ideas," Dean smiles. "We're only just getting started."
That ambition is perhaps the defining characteristic of Deano’s’ Garage. The new workshop isn't the end of the story. It's another step in a journey that began with a twelve-year-old who simply loved spending time in a garage and has grown into a business built on trust, transparency and a genuine passion for doing things properly.
For Hofmann Megaplan, projects like this demonstrate that supplying equipment is only one part of the job. Understanding a customer's ambitions, helping maximise the potential of their workshop and supporting them as their business grows is what creates lasting partnerships.
For Dean, the future is already taking shape. As the business continues to grow, one thing is certain. This won't be the last chapter in the Deano’s’ Garage story.
